C3 Advocates Visit Capitol Hill to Strike a Blow Against Colorectal Cancer

After two days of training and strategizing, 65 colorectal cancer advocates took their message to Capitol Hill today that colorectal cancer is a preventable, treatable and beatable disease.

Advocates participating in the 2009 Call-on Congress held face-to-face meetings with their Members of Congress and staff to urge their support of colorectal cancer legislation that would improve access to screenings for those who are poor, uninsured or underinsured, and for a program at the Department of Defense that would conduct research into new treatments and a cure for the disease. Representative Kay Granger (R-TX), C3 advocate Gordon Cole, who is a stage IV colorectal cancer survivor, and C3 President Carlea Bauman will be interviewed about ways to get involved in the fight against colorectal cancer on Tuesday, March 24th at 4 PM EDT/1 PM PST.

Leucovorin Shortage Update

The Food and Drug Administration has updated information on the ongoing leucovorin shortage as of 3/23/09.

Both Bedford Laboratories and Teva Pharmaceuticals are reporting manufacturing delays for leucovorin.  Spectrum Pharmaceuticals has limited supplies of Fusilev® (levoleucovorin) which is a different formulation.  Fusilev dosages are not equal to leucovorin doses and need to be used with care. Call-on Congress Continues: Advocates Get a Visit from Member of Congress, Begin Preparation for Tuesday Hill Meetings

logo1Representative Jim Moran (D-VA) spoke to the 65 C3 advocates taking part in the 2009 Call-on Congress today. His message to them: “Don’t be nervous in your meetings with your legislators. You are the experts on the issue.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S.

In the month of March we are working to increase awareness that lives can be saved with screening. and colorectal cancer often can be prevented.

There is no shame in preventing cancer, and there are no reasons not to undergo screening. I have done my colonoscopy myself since I have a family history of colon cancer. It was pretty easy. The worst was the preparation a day before…which, in fact, was my day in Norris clinic. When I can do it, you can.

Regular screening tests can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. We know that screening with colonoscopies can also find colorectal cancer early when treatment can cure the cancer.
