Free Colonoscopy Program in Connecticut Ends June 29

A reminder that free colonoscopies for Connecticut residents without insurance or whose insurance doesn’t pay for colonoscopy screening ends on June 29.

The program is a collaboration between the Connecticut Department of Health, the Community Health Center Association of Connecticut, and participating gastroenterologists.

Connecticut residents between the ages of 50 and 64 can contact one of the participating community health centers to schedule a test.

Colorectal Cancer News in Brief: June 12

Briefs are back this week after a couple of weeks off for the ASCO meeting, and we review research that finds small liver mets don’t affect survival after treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis.  A gene has been found  that’s necessary for Celebrex to control new colon polyps.

In other headlines, chimps don’t get cancer but aren’t as smart as humans, a new clinical trial is underway for people with KRAS mutant tumors, and a subcommittee of the House Veterans Affairs Committee will be holding hearings to investigate infections from poorly sanitized colonoscopes in VA medical centers.

Health Care Reform Legislation Announced in the Senate

Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP), recently released The Affordable Health Choices Act. The bill aims to reduce health care costs, protect individuals’ choices of doctors, hospitals and insurance plans and guarantee, quality and affordable health care for all Americans. FDA Alert: Clarcon Skin Products Have High Levels of Bacteria

The Food and Drug Administration warns consumers not to use skin sanitizers and skin protectants manufactured by the Clarcon Laboratory of Roy, Utah.  A recent inspection found high-levels of disease-causing bacteria in the products.

Some of the bacteria can cause infections in the skin and underlying tissues which may need surgical treatment. This is especially concerning since the products are promoted as anti-microbials that treat open wounds and damaged skin and protect the skin against disease.

Consumers who have the products should not use them and throw them away in household trash. Read the rest of this entry »

Frankly Speaking about Colorectal Cancer in Miami

colorectal-coverA free educational workshop — Frankly Speaking about Colorectal Cancer — will be held at the Wellness Community of Greater Miami on Thursday, June 11th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Dr. Antonio Ucar, medical oncologist at Baptist Hospital, will be the featured speaker.  Dr. Ucar is Board Certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, Pain Medicine, Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care.
