You may have heard the very exciting data about patients with breast cancer who carry BRCA mutations. These mutations indicate a genetic predisposition for breast cancer.

The function of BRCA is DNA repair, very similar to the genes associated with familial colorectal cancer known as Lynch syndrome or HNPCC (hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer) which are the DNA mismatch repair genes. Read the rest of this entry »

Colorectal Cancer News in Brief: July 25

Research shows how lemon and lavender ease stress by acting on the immune system and gene expression. In colon cancer, patients with lots of immune-system cells in their tumors have better survival, and men and younger people risk more severe Erbitux rash.

C3 Advocate Christine Niemi Dies

C3 advocate Christine Niemi died early in the morning on July 18th of colon cancer.  Friends who were with her say that she was sleeping peacefully and was not in any pain.  She was 32.

Christine was a member of the C3 Grassroots Action Committee,  leading  the grassroots colorectal cancer community in pushing  for change.

Her death was marked by the same grace and courage that she brought to her advocacy for others with colorectal cancer.  Realizing that she needed more support, she returned home to Nebraska to be near family in June and was hospitalized shortly after.

After her death, her brother Jason wrote,

One request Christy would have is to keep fighting to make people aware of Colorectal Cancer. This became her passion over the last few years. Now it is up to us to pick up where she left off and continue making a difference. Read the rest of this entry »

Army of Women Joins Forces with caBIG

Sharing data over the caBIG network will help the Avon/Love Army of Women move  ”Beyond the Cure” towards research to prevent breast cancer.

Dr. Susan Love from the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, joined caBIG director Dr. Ken Buetow to announce the partnership at the caBIG Annual Meeting on July 20, 2009 in Washington.

caBIG is the National Cancer Institute’s cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid, an open source, collaborative computer information network designed to link cancer research data across a broad range of needs and projects. Read the rest of this entry »

Fox Business Anchor Raises Awareness and Funds for Colorectal Cancer Research

Cheryl & her father, Joe CasoneThis Sunday, July 26, 2009, Cheryl Casone, a Fox Business Network anchor, will be competing in her first triathlon.  After competing in four marathons and four half-marathons, Cheryl decided that she wanted to do something different and sought a new way to challenge herself.  She soon realized that she could do much more than that.

In the spring of 2008, Cheryl’s father, Joe Casone, was diagnosed with stage IV rectal cancer.  In conjunction with competing in her first triathlon, Cheryl has also chosen to raise money for colorectal cancer research and the C3: Colorectal Cancer Coalition’s Lisa Fund.

As she expressed in her blog, The Casone Exchange: “Because I live in New York and not Dallas, I can’t drive to appointments or fetch groceries, but I can focus on raising money for colorectal cancer research so that one day another family doesn’t have to experience the effect of this terrible disease.” Read the rest of this entry »
