Kimberly Wins a Wedding

Kimberly and Cecil

Kimberly Wright and Cecil Bradstreet  are being married on December 26, a date they chose because it falls in a free week between Kimberly’s tenth and eleventh chemotherapy treatments.

They won a holiday dream wedding from WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, chosen by online voters.  Cecil wrote their story for the WIS contest as a surprise for Kimberly who was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer during emergency surgery on July 1. Read the rest of this entry »

Laparoscopic Surgery a Safe Choice for Rectal Cancer

In the hands of experts, laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer was as successful as an open abdominal operation.  Cancer free survival after five years wasn’t any different, and cancer was no more likely to return in and around the rectum.

Even if surgeons had to change their approach during the operation and convert from laparoscopic to open surgery, outcomes were not affected. Read the rest of this entry »

Aspirin Saves Lives after Colon Cancer Treatment

Colorectal cancer patients with early stage disease were 30 percent less likely to die from cancer and 20 percent less likely to die at all if they took aspirin regularly after their diagnosis.

Benefit was even greater for those who began taking the medicine for the first time after their diagnosis.

However, only the group whose tumors tested positive for COX-2 (cyclooxygenase2) benefited from aspirin.   Read the rest of this entry »

Dr. Francis Collins Confirmed as NIH Head

collins2On Friday, August 7, the Senate unanimously confirmed the appointment of Francis Collins, MD, PhD, as the new director of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Collins is both a physician and an expert in genetics.  He led the Human Genome Project to an early success in identifying and sequencing the 25,000 genes in the human genome and headed the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) from 1993 through 2008. Read the rest of this entry »
