SCOPE Run and Fun to Beat Colorectal Cancer

Ready to run?  Walk?  Party?  Celebrate colorectal cancer survivors?

The 5th Annual SCOPE Fun Run begins at 8:00 a.m. on March 27, 2010 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Registration is now open.

The Sprint for Colorectal Oncology,Prevention and Education (SCOPE) includes:

  • 5K Run/Walk
  • 1 K Fun Walk for children beginning at 9 a.m.
  • Survivor’s Fair
  • Post-Race Party with live band Lewna Eclipse

A special feature of the day will be a chance to explore inside the Super Colon, an educational project of the Prevent Cancer Foundation.   Eight feet high and 20 feet long, the Super Colon helps visitors understand the importance of screening to prevent colorectal cancer.

Share Your Love and Strength on Valentine’s Day

This year instead of candy or flowers, honor their courage with a gift to C3 on Valentine’s Day.

Let them know that you are joining with them and C3 to win the fight against colorectal cancer through research, empowerment, and access.

President’s Day District Work Period Meetings with Members

C3 is working with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network to organize meetings over the President’s Day District Work Period with Senators and Representatives to ask for their support for increased federal funding for cancer research and cancer control programs.

You may not be able to travel to DC in March to participate in the 2010 Call-on Congress, but this is your chance to meet with your representatives and talk with them about the importance of increasing federal funding for cancer research. Read the rest of this entry »

Colorectal Cancer Research Briefs: Patients want colonoscopy videos

  • Hormone replacement therapy reduces risk of colon cancer.
  • Smoking before age 30 increases chances that colon cancer will recur.
  • Low CEA levels improve both survival and disease-free survival for stage II colon cancer.

Choosing the Best Colon Surgery for Lynch Syndrome

Removing the entire colon (subtotal colectomy) is sometimes recommended for patients with Lynch syndrome when colon cancer is diagnosed.  In addition, some people who have an inherited Lynch mutation have their colons removed to prevent colon cancer.

While subtotal colectomy didn’t reduce deaths from Lynch-related colon cancer, it did cut down on additional colorectal cancer diagnoses and the need for other abdominal surgery. Read the rest of this entry »
