The stage and risk factors of your cancer.
Where both the primary tumor and any spread (metastases) are located.
What other medical problems you have.
The recommendations of your treatment team.
Getting a second opinion.
Whether or not a clinical trial might be appropriate for you.
Your personal goals for the future.

If making a treatment plan, the NCCN/ACS booklet Colon and Rectal Cancer: Treatment Guidelines for Patients is very important. The 2007 booklet includes decision trees that help you under the most current guidelines for diagnosing, treating, and following up colon and rectal cancers. The Treatment Guidelines help you to find out where you are right now, what your choices are, and what the next steps can be.
