Patients & Survivors Stage III Colon Cancer South Carolina
Back to Champion Stories

Story: "Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to hear. I was sitting at my desk completing my daily work assignments. I stepped out into the hall to receive a phone call from whom at that time I believed to be a Lab Technician. I was told over the phone, while at my job, that I had colon cancer. I had to brace myself to avoid falling.

"In May of 2015, I had a hand-assisted right colon resection. I was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer. I was told I needed twelve cycles of chemotherapy included with a parting gift, a chemo pump, that I referred to as my Boo!

"Thirty days after my resection surgery I was re-admitted for a ruptured right ovarian cyst. Nine days later, and on the day of my discharge I went directly to the cancer center for chemotherapy orientation. That was the moment that I declared myself a 'survivor.' I seldom uttered the word cancer during my entire process. I'm one year NED, and I believe that God spared my life to help save others. I still have some physical challenges on my road to recovery, but I live each day with greater determination. I'm more deliberate and definitely continuing the fight against colon cancer through community advocacy, allowing others to see cancer through my eyes, and sounding the alarm for better health coverage. I'm in it for the win!"

Advice: "See yourself cancer-free! Despite how you feel, know that you're already a victor. A light breaking forth out of the shadows of despair, uncertainty, Dis-ease! Yes, Dis-ease! But you have already overcome because greater is He who is within you than IT- that is temporarily within you."
