C3 Joins Kaleidoscope Celebration

kaleidoscope finals rightC3 is excited to be a partner in Kaleidoscope – a holiday entertainment special featuring Olympic skating champions and GRAMMY Award-winning music artists while addressing issues surrounding women and cancer.

The show will air nationally on FOX on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009 from 4:00 – 5:30pm EST  immediately following the Thanksgiving football telecast.

Presented with the support of sanofi-aventis, the show will be highlighted by the historic return of legendary Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill who will skate to the music of fellow cancer survivor Olivia Newton-John and music producer David Foster.   Read the rest of this entry »

Catherine Knowles Joins C3 as Director of Policy

C3:Colorectal Cancer Coalition welcomes Catherine Knowles as its new Director of Policy.  She joins the C3 staff on September 21.

Before coming to C3, Catherine was Legislative Counsel to Congresswoman Kay Granger of Texas where she had responsibility for health care issues in addition to matters involving social security, education, labor, and small business. Read the rest of this entry »

Oxford Conference Looks at Sensible Approach to Clinical Trials

Nancy Roach is the Founder of C3 and Chair of the Board of Directors.

On September 5 -6, I put on my sensible black shoes to attend the second Sensible Guidelines for the Conduct of Clinical Trials meeting at Oxford University in England.  This invitation-only meeting convened research leaders to discuss how to improve large randomized clinical trials.

Why “Sensible Guidelines”?

People are the ‘experimental subjects’ of clinical research. Since World War II, laws and regulations have been passed to make sure that research participants are protected during the conduct of clinical trials. Over time – and especially in the last decade – many of the well-meaning laws and regulations have had an unintended consequence:  bureaucracy that does not always protect or help patients, but does eat up resources. Patients in trials often see only the tip of the bureaucratic iceberg, while research staff, academic institutions, government agencies and drug companies struggle with the rest of it.

C3 Advocate Christine Niemi Dies

Christine Niemi

C3 advocate Christine Niemi died early in the morning on July 18th of colon cancer.  Friends who were with her say that she was sleeping peacefully and was not in any pain.  She was 32.

Christine was a member of the C3 Grassroots Action Committee,  leading  the grassroots colorectal cancer community in pushing  for change.

Her death was marked by the same grace and courage that she brought to her advocacy for others with colorectal cancer.  Realizing that she needed more support, she returned home to Nebraska to be near family in June and was hospitalized shortly after.

After her death, her brother Jason wrote,

One request Christy would have is to keep fighting to make people aware of Colorectal Cancer. This became her passion over the last few years. Now it is up to us to pick up where she left off and continue making a difference. Read the rest of this entry »
