Q&A with Hope Through Grace’s Founder and Board Chair Grace Butler Ph.D

Posted by Tavia Gilchrist on June 18th, 2012

Grace Butler, Ph.D, had done everything right.  She exercised regularly, ate healthy meals, and had an annual FOBT test, a sigmoidoscopy, and barium enema exams.  But no one told her she needed a colonoscopy – and that oversight led to her diagnosis of stage III colon cancer in 1999.

Butler spoke to Fight Colorectal Cancer recently about the diagnosis that changed her life and how she’s extending hope in the fight against colorectal cancer to Texans without insurance.

Before your diagnosis, how would you describe your life?
I had a wonderfully blessed life before cancer. I am an educator, and I started my career as a band and orchestra teacher in New Orleans. I moved from teaching to administration in higher education. I completed a doctorate at New York University and I earned appointments at several universities.

It’s SHOWTIME – ASCO Style!

Posted by Michael Sola on May 29th, 2012

In just a few short days members of the Fight Colorectal Cancer team will make their way to the windy city and McCormick Place for what will be one of the largest “meeting of the minds” this community gets to see.

This week marks the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) Annual Meeting where tens of thousands oncologists, researchers, and cancer care professionals from more than 100 countries come together, collaborate and meet to get behind a cure.

Those who are attending the 2012 annual meeting will find something new to the event: ASCO is offering in-depth educational opportunities dedicated to topics of interest in the oncology community as part of their Annual Meeting registration.

Clinical Care in Oncology for the Advanced Practice Provider
Cosponsored by the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology and the Oncology Nursing Society, this seminar is designed to meet the educational needs of the advanced practice nurse and physician assistant. Topics covered will include trends in oncology care, standards for cancer screening, and symptom and side-effect management.

Designs for Contemporary Early-Phase Clinical Trials — unfortunately is Sold Out
Cosponsored by the Society for Clinical Trials, this seminar will enable participants to understand the design, implementation, and analysis of early-phase clinical trials.

New Drugs in Oncology
This seminar’s focus is the theoretical and practical aspects of both recently approved drugs and those on their way to approval. Topics covered will include mechanisms of action, administration, toxicity and side-effect management, and use in the clinic.

These seminars are not part of the official ASCO Annual Meeting program. Each one will be held onsite at McCormick Place, from 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 31, until 12:00 PM on Friday, June 1.

So if you are attending, take advantage of the opportunity and register for the seminars here. According to the ASCO 2012 website, the seminar registration fee includes a boxed lunch on Thursday and a continental breakfast on Friday.

Expect to see more reports from Chicago both here in the blog and on our Facebook page. For all you TWITTER fans check in with: Anjee, Kim and Carlea on Twitter for quick informative updates.
