CORPORATE GIVING

by board member Dana Rye

dana-rye-fight-crcCorporate giving might sound like something out of reach, especially at a large company. But as I learned, many companies have huge amounts of money set aside for organizations that are important to their employees.

Take for example my old company – an investment bank called Credit Suisse. I started with a fundraising run a few years ago. Credit Suisse agreed to donate $3,000 just for convincing ten coworkers to run or walk the race with me. They also have funds available for volunteer work, board membership and holiday giving. After years of fundraising runs, Credit Suisse agreed to place Fight Colorectal Cancer on the list of organizations for suggested donations from employees. The firm then matched every dollar donated – a total of $24,000!

HOW EASY IS IT TO RAISE $24,000 IN ONE MONTH?

Turns out, very! I started by contacting the Credit Suisse Foundation –the small department in charge of anything charitable that the firm does. At some companies, they sit within Human Resources. At the very least, HR can point you in the right direction.

The foundation had a link on our website and was very helpful over the phone. They helped me find and submit the proper forms, secure the money for Fight CRC, and even gave us t-shirts for the run!

For the holiday campaign, once I learned Fight CRC was on the list, I went to work to raise as much as possible. I emailed everyone that I used to work with, most of whom were already quite familiar with Fight CRC from the past few years. I sent emails explaining the campaign, that every dollar would be matched, and asked them to email others on my behalf. I also targeted friends and colleagues who worked in different areas of the bank, asking them to do the same for their colleagues. It always helps to send a sample email that they can forward on your behalf.

Just a month later, we reached $24,000!

I hope this inspires you to investigate corporate giving at your workplaces. Good luck with your efforts and THANK YOU for all the work you do for Fight CRC!
