Dear Dr Lenz, my wife (54 years old) has been for almost 2 years on low dose Xeloda for slow growing stage IV colon cancer. She also is taking Vitamin B6. Her dentist says she has advanced bone loss posisbly due to the chemo. Is this possible? If so, is there anything that can be done?

I am excited to hear that the trial for a stem cell drug is proceeding - that's great news.

And anecdotally, I used to get canker sores. Sauerkraut juice worked for me!

Ryan, we have made great progress. all the toxicology studies in animals have been completed and it was not at all toxic at levels where we see anti tumor efficacy. We are getting ready to get an IND and hope to get the drug into the clinic end of this year. we have promising data in colon and pancreas cancer as well as CML. HJL

Dr. Lenz,

Sorry this is off topic because I don't know any other way to reach you. One of your postings last year on revolution health talked about a therapy that you were developing at USC that targeted the stem cells in colon cancer. You talked about how tumors are like a tree and that chemo will usually cut down the tree but the roots (stem cells) will remain and will eventually grow again. I was just wondering what the status is of this treatment against stems cells. Are you still working on it? Has it been in clinical trials yet? It seem like this type of treatment could be extremely beneficial if it works.

a very common side effect we usually use mouth wash such as biotene or make our own (USC cocktail) which usually helps. ice chips reduce the pain and decrease the blood flow and may protect the development of it. since our mouth washes works we aare not doing the ice chips too often anymore. but it works.
Dr Lenz,

I am dealing with a sore on my lower lip right now. I am currently on Folfiri and Avastin. I also have a history of cold sores (pre cancer), so I'm not sure if this is a cold sore or if it is a mouth sore being caused by the chemo. My oncologist thinks it is being caused by the 5-FU. He wants me to suck on some ice chips and rub some ice on my lips prior to receiving the 5-FU bolus at my next treatment and for the 46 hours that I am attached to the pump. Have you heard of this treatment? I am also treating my lip with Abbreva in case it is a cold sore.
