    AACR Rally for Medical Research

    12:00 amWashington D.C.
    Advocacy Event

    Mid-September is going to be a very critical and important time to be calling on our nation’s policymakers to invest in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the health and economic security of our nation, especially since without some kind of agreement in September to either enact the FY 2014 appropriations bills or pass a short-term stopgap funding measure (continuing resolution), the Government (and NIH) will run out of funding when the next fiscal year begins October 1st. In addition, the debate that will take place in September on Capitol Hill will also highlight our concerns about the threat of an additional year of the automatic, across the board cuts in discretionary federal spending -- a process known as sequestration. And if all this is not enough, the Congressional debate is also likely to factor in the recent announcement by Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew that measures to avoid breaching the debt ceiling (for the United States) are projected to run out in mid-October. The “Rally for Medical Research Hill Day” involves:

    · Participation from more than 150 organizations (including Fight Colorectal Cancer);

    · More than 225 survivors, survivor and research advocates, researchers/scientists, and clinicians will participate in the meetings on Capitol Hill on Sept. 18th;

    · The “Hill Day” participants are coming from 40 different states PRE-HILL DAY RECEPTION - TUESDAY, SEPT. 17 The “Hill Day” reception, Tuesday, September 17 (from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Dirksen Senate Office Building Room 106), will include short talks from Members of Congress, survivors and advocates, including Lisa Niemi Swayze, wife of the late actor, Patrick Swayze, and recently crowned Miss USA 2013 Winner, Erin Brady (who will spend the next year on a nationwide speaking tour to raise awareness for breast and ovarian cancer, as well as raise awareness for charities which help children of alcoholics), among others (possibly including NIH Director Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D.).

    HILL DAY - WEDNESDAY SEPT. 18 The “Hill Day” breakfast, which will begin at 8 a.m. at the Reserve Officers Association building (located directly adjacent to the U.S. Capitol at the corner of Constitution Avenue NE and First Street), will provide “Hill Day” participants with materials for the day and will include a “send-off” from the Honorable John Edward Porter, Former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives (R-Ill.) and current Chair of Research!America, who was instrumental in doubling NIH’s budget (1998-2003) when he served as Chairman of the House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee. The group of “Hill Day” participants will also gather on the steps of the U.S. Capitol for a picture before their first meetings with Congressional offices.
