Vegas Sign to Turn Blue for CRC

Welcome to Las Vegas Sign to Turn Blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

LAS VEGAS – On March 2, 2015 at 9 a.m., the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign will be turning blue to bring awareness to colorectal cancer and recognize Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Colorectal cancer is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented through the use of screening tests, yet colorectal cancer remains the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second most common cause of cancer deaths for men and women in the United States. Each year, tens of thousands of lives young and old are lost to this disease. Currently, one in three adults are not up-to-date with colorectal cancer screenings. Fight Colorectal Cancer is part of a national initiative to increase the screening rate to 80 percent by 2018 for Americans 50 years and older.

Las Vegas resident Melissa Coetzee’s husband Sean was only 32 when he received his late stage diagnosis of colorectal cancer and died six weeks after his diagnosis. Sean had a family history of rectal cancer and presented symptoms such as unexplained abdominal pain and weight loss, yet due to his age he did not receive colorectal cancer screening (the US Preventative Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening begin at age 50). People like Sean continue to make colorectal cancer one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States.

Blue Star States is Fight Colorectal Cancer’s state proclamation campaign. Through this campaign, the organization seeks to increase awareness of colorectal cancer and advocate for better patient-doctor communication.

“Fight Colorectal Cancer is thrilled that Governor Sandoval proclaimed March 2015 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Nevada,” stated Anjee Davis, president of Fight Colorectal Cancer. “Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is about educating men and women to save lives. The more we talk about this disease, and the more we encourage our family and friends to get screened – the more lives we can save.”

On March 2 at 9 a.m., the lights on the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign will turn blue in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. All colorectal cancer advocates, survivors, caregivers, and loved ones are encouraged to attend and wear a blue shirt. Sean’s wife, Melissa, will speak at the ceremony on behalf of the cause.
