May is National Cancer Research Month

National Cancer Awareness MonthMay has been set aside as National Cancer Research Month by Congressional resolutions in both the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate.

During May researchers, advocates, and patients are focusing on how far cancer research has brought us in preventing and treating cancer . . . and how far we have to go to end death and suffering from cancer.

In particular we are concerned that

  • There is adequate government funding for cancer research from basic laboratory studies to large clinical trials of new treatments and prevention strategies.
  • Patients learn about appropriate clinical trials and participate in them.

As noted in the Congressional Record, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), one of the sponsors of the House resolution, said,

Preventing and ultimately finding a cure for cancer is a major public health challenge. Providing a National Cancer Research Month will remind us that basic, clinical, epidemiological, and behavioral research are integral to identifying causes and developing strategies for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cures for cancer.
