MEET BRIDGET B.-Veal-NYC-2013

Bridget Veal, Survivor

Lake Panasoffkee, FL

BRIDGET’S STORY

It all started with a pain on my right side – which they diagnosed as a fibroid tumor.  Six months later, the same pain on the left side – but too low for an ovary issue.  My CT scan showed a mass, about the size of a grapefruit, engulfing the ovary.  Now, yes I was tired a lot. I’d sleep four hours after coming home each night, but hey, I was coaching and it was the end of the school year! Long story short, sigmoid colon cancer (3 inches taken), 13/24 lymph nodes positive, mets on liver, and an ileostomy (reversed after 6 months)!  I was given not so good odds – hopefully a year (Stage IV) diagnosis. I’ve had 8 surgeries and have managed to stay healthy by being on/off chemo every 6 months.  The good news (drum roll….) July 2014 will make 6 years!  I monitor with CEA, CT and Pet Scans.  NED since December 2013.  I truly feel that my faith in God and the support of family and friends has helped me make it through.

BRIDGET’S ADVICE

Never give up – take care of your body and listen to it!  Believe in your future and believe in miracles!  They do happen!

WHAT DOES ONE MILLION STRONG MEAN TO BRIDGET?

There are others out there that are fighting every day to stay positive and stay alive!  Knowing there are others who have survived a scary diagnosis gives me hope.  I want to give that to others as well.
