Chemo Delay After Surgery Reduces Survival Rates

A paper presented at the recent 2011 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium conference reported important evidence that, for colorectal cancer patients getting chemotherapy after surgery, the sooner the better.

For people diagnosed with stage III colon cancer, stage II rectal cancer, or stage II colon cancer showing certain high-risk features, researchers found that each four-week delay in starting chemotherapy after surgery was associated with a 12% lower rate of survival five years later.

Remembering Arlene Murphy

The Colorectal Cancer Coalition is deeply saddened by the loss of Arlene Murphy who passed away January 29, 2011. Arlene was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer in September 2004, and over the years underwent several surgeries and numerous different chemotherapies. In July 2009, she retired from her job of 25 years as a secretary for a local school district in Southwest Ohio.

A member of our Grassroots Action Committee since 2009, Arlene was an inspiration to everyone she met. She brought a spunkiness and passion to her advocacy work that truly made a difference. She leaves behind a legacy of passion, commitment and energy on behalf of all touched by colorectal cancer.

Help Answer Questions About Exercise after Colon Cancer Treatment

Are you done — or almost done — with your treatment for colon cancer?

Will you help answer a question about how to help colon cancer survivors  increase their physical activity?

You’ll learn more about colon cancer and may be randomly assigned to a special interactive program that is designed to help recovering colon cancer patients develop a healthy lifestyle.

The Survivorship Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) study is available in centers in Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina, and Connecticut.  To be part of the research, you need to have completed treatment for stage I, II, or III colon cancer within the past 12 months.  Read the rest of this entry »

Leading GI Cancer Researcher Updates Patients

Last night, Dr. Edith Mitchell of Thomas Jefferson University Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA, updated colorectal cancer patients on the latest research and treatment news in an online webinar.

Dr. Mitchell highlighted the most important news for colon and rectal cancer patients to come from the 2011 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium held in San Francisco last month. She answer such questions as…
