Last Minute CR Keeps the Lights On

Posted by Joe Arite on October 1st, 2008

On Tuesday President Bush signed a continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the government for another twelve months.

The president signed the $634 billion spending bill on the last day of the federal government’s budget year. Even though the bill was more expensive than the president would have liked, it was a piece of legislation that was a “must pass” before Congress adjourns.

As mentioned earlier, the Senate attempted to add a $56 billion dollar stimulus package that would have included $1.2 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Unfortunately the measure failed to receive the 60 votes needed.

Bailing out the economy is an overwhelming topic of conversation, thought, and possible action in the US Government. However, the defeat of the Senate stimulus package is disappointing and ominous. Where will funds for cancer research and education come from? Will the NIH be neglected in favor of financial concerns? Isn’t health/wellness paramount?
