Stimulus Bill Up for Vote in the House

Posted by Joe Arite on January 28th, 2009

The economic stimulus package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (H.R. 598), is set to be voted on in the House of Representatives tonight. Democratic leaders would like to have the bill on the desk of President Obama, ready for a signature, by mid February.

Congress and the Obama Administration hope the controversial $826 billion bill will help jump start our struggling economy. As I mentioned last week, the House Appropriations Committee passed their portion of the bill and included a $2 billion increase in funding for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This will be a much needed boost in funding for NIH since the agency has seen flat funding for the last five years

Yesterday, the Senate appropriations committee passed their version of the bill which included $3.5 billion dollars for NIH. The full Senate is expected vote next week.

Stayed tuned for new developments…
