Summary:

The New York City kickoff of One Million Strong reached millions as people participated in the event in Grand Central Terminal, logged online and lent their media outlets to ‘march’ for the cause on March 3, 2014.

Success in The City:

yoga-colon-cancer-grand-centraOur event did not disappoint. So many survivors, caregivers and advocates braved the cold and traveled amidst winter weather advisories to join us! THANK YOU to all of you who came out to march with us! The day was absolutely amazing. Here were a few of our high-points:

> Grand Central Terminal hosted our event as hundreds came and participated in yoga and zumba, walked-through the Colon Cancer Alliance’s inflatable colon, watched a vow renewal ceremony of survivors and caregivers, heard Craig Campbell sing, met New York City nonprofits and learned about colorectal cancer.

> Craig Campbell serenaded the 18 couples who renewed their vows – making sure to play his new hit “Keep them Kisses Comin’.

> The support of the colorectal cancer community in NYC gave us strength! A special thank you to Drs. David Greenwald and Mark Pochapin for speaking during Opening Remarks!

> The American Cancer Society joined our cause and Kris Kim, Vice President of the American Cancer Society’s Eastern Division, spoke about the 80% by 2018 screening goal.

> Volunteers flew in from across the country to help with the event and our presenting sponsor, Bayer HealthCare, brought an army of volunteers!

> Over 200 signed up to march with us in the One Million Strong March down 43rd Street to Times Square.
A great group of advocates, survivors and sponsors rang the closing bell at NASDAQ.

nyc-marchstat-colon-cancer> Our evening event – Blue is the New Black – featured Carmen Marc Valvo’s private collection of blue gowns including a dress owned by Katie Couric and one worn to the Oscars by Grace De Niro (Robert De Niro’s wife) the previous evening.

> Craig Campbell entertained guests as he broke out several of his songs while guests danced and dined.

> Carlo’s Bakery – AKA Cake Boss – donated cupcakes for all evening event attendees.

> Our raffle during the Blue is the New Black party raised over $4,000 which was matched by two anonymous donors - totaling over $12,000 raised for Fight Colorectal Cancer!

Amazing Support from our Online Community:

Even those who couldn’t join us in NYC were quick to be a part of One Million Strong! As we monitored website traffic and social media hits throughout the day, we watched awareness go up as our numbers increased! Take a look at some of these stats:

> 3,763 tweets reaching over 12.1 MILLION followers on March 3 (using @fightcrc, #1MilStrong & #MarchforCRC)

> Notable “tweeters” included a retweet from Katie Couric and Carson Daly, several tweets from Craig Campbell, a mention by BET/ Entertainment Tonight reporter Rocsi Diaz and special shout-outs from the American Cancer Society

> We broke our ‘page hit record’ of 3K with over 5,000 page hits on Monday, March 3.

THANK YOU to all who ‘marched’ with us via social media! You made a difference!

The Media Went Marching, Too
