Recalled Peanuts are for Sale in Retail Stores

Peanut Corporation of America has revealed that it manufactured and shipped peanuts to dollar stores for retail sale.  While no peanut butter was involved, peanuts in cans and jars were distributed to 99 Cent Stuff, 99 Cents Only Stores, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree Stores, according to a news release on February 8.2009.

Peanut Corporation of America says that it has not manufactured any products for retail sale since 2007.  However, the Casey’s, Parnell’s Pride, Reggie, and Robinson Crusoe brands of peanuts and mixed nuts were manufactured and shipped to stores and are part of the recall that includes anything that was made by PCA since the beginning of 2007.

The list does not include any brands made by PCA for other firms.  A searchable list of recalled products is available on the FDA website.

On January 28, 2009, PCA announced it was voluntarily recalling all peanuts and peanut products processed in its Blakely, Georgia facility since January 1, 2007 because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The FDA has ordered the PCA plant in Blakely GA closed.  It was the source of the current Salmonella outbreak.  In addition, PCA closed another plant in Plainview, TX on Monday when Salmonella was found there.

Salmonella infection can be very serious and even fatal in babies, young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems like cancer patients on chemotherapy.
