North Carolina Gastroenterologists Offer Free Colonoscopies

Posted by Kate Murphy on March 4th, 2009

Digestive Health Specialists, located in Winston-Salem NC, will provide free screening colonoscopies to 50 people impacted by the economic turndown.  Patients who are over 50, have not been screened, and  have lost jobs and health insurance are eligible to apply.

Colonoscopies will be performed in Digestive Health Specialist facilities in Winstom-Salem, Kernersville, and Thomasville on March 14, 2009.  The program is part of March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr. William Bray, Medical Director of Digestive Health Specialists said,

During this economic crisis, people may have to postpone preventative medicine for reasons out of their control. A delay in screening can mean the difference in developing or preventing colon cancer. We want to make sure that even in these difficult financial times, people have access to screening colonoscopy, a potentially life-saving procedure.

Patients can download a sign-up form or call the DHS office at 336-768-6211.

I am uninsured, jobless and miserable with my digestive system. Do you still offer free colonostopies? I have constant, diareia, bloating, nausa, burning in throat, etc.

Unfortunately, these colonoscopies were offered for a short time last year and were for screening only.

If you have symptoms, you need an evaluation of those symptoms. This is more complicated, and very difficult for people are uninsured.
