Colon Cancer Alliance Rings the NASDAQ Bell

In celebration of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, members of the Colon Cancer Alliance rang the closing bell for NASDAQ on March 2.

CCA CEO Andrew Spiegel was joined by staff, board members, and colon cancer survivors for the closing ceremony.

Cleveland Cavaliers Score Against Colon Cancer

Cleveland Cavaliers LogoMonday night, March 8, is Colon Cancer Awareness Night when the Cavaliers take on the San Antonio Spurs.

Fans who attend the game will get a blue t-shirt promoting the March collaboration between the Cavs and the Cleveland Clinic — Score Against Colon Cancer.

Nurses from the Cleveland Clinic will be at the arena with questionnaires to help determine individual risk scores for colorectal cancer.  The risk assessment is also available online. Read the rest of this entry »

Young Patients Do Worse After Surgery for Liver Mets

Patients under 40 appear to have more aggressive liver tumors from colorectal cancer and poorer long-term outcomes.

After surgery to remove the cancer that had spread to their liver, patients who were 40 or younger had poorer overall survival and shorter time until cancer returned.

The percentage of younger patients who were alive without cancer five years later was similar to older patients, which the research team attributed to more aggressive treatment for the young patients, along with repeated surgery.  Read the rest of this entry »

Catch a Killer: Get Screened for Colon Cancer reminds African Americans to be screened for colorectal cancer.

CSI:NY actor Hill Harper urges screening for colorectal cancer in a new PSA from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

Guidelines suggest that those at average risk begin screening at age 50, however, some studies have shown that African-Americans are more frequently diagnosed with colon cancer at a younger age, leading some experts to suggest that African-Americans should begin screening at age 45.
