House Passes FY 2009 Spending Bill

The House of Representatives passed the FY 2009 omnibus spending bill on Wednesday, February 25. The Senate will consider the bill the week of March 2, 2009. After more than six years as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Elias Zerhouni stepped down on Friday, October 31st. Dr. Zerhouni presided over the nation’s primary public funding source for biomedical research. Zerhouni tapped Dr. Raynard Kington to temporarily step into this role. Continue reading…

Emergency Supplemental Update

As I mentioned last week, the FY08 emergency supplemental appropriations bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. Included in the bill was an additional $150 million for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The package will now be sent to the Senate where it is expected to be greeted with similar support. It is also important to note that White House Budget Director Jim Nussle went on record last Thursday to express the administration’s approval of the final package.
