Reps. Capps and Pallone Introduce House Version of the 21st Century Cancer ALERT Act

Today, Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) and Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) introduced the House version of the 21st Century Cancer Access to Life-Saving Early Detection, Research and Treatment (ALERT) Act (H.R. 6224).  The bill is a modified version of the Senate bill introduced by the late Senator Edward Kennedy (D-VA) and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) before health care reform was enacted.

In 2010, cancer is expected to be the leading cause of death worldwide.  The 21st Century Cancer ALERT Act is the first comprehensive cancer bill since we first declared war on cancer nearly 38 years ago with the enactment of the National Cancer Act in 1971.

Kennedy to Step Down from Judiciary Committee

Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) announced he will be stepping down from the Senate Judiciary Committee in the 111th Congress to focus on health care reform. As chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, I expect to lead a very full agenda in the next Congress, including working with [President-elect] Obama to guarantee affordable health care, at long last, for every American,Kennedy said. Kennedy Returns to the Senate

Greeted by a standing ovation from senators on both sides of the aisle, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) returned to the Senate floor on Wednesday for the first time since he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May.

His return brought a victory to a stalled Medicare bill. The Medicare Improvements for Patients Providers Act (HR 6331) was approved yesterday by a veto proof margin in the Senate. Now the 10.6 percent cut to physicians’ payments, which went into effect on July 1st, will be reversed.

Senator Kennedy Recuperating After Surgery

Longtime friend of C3, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), is back at home in Massachusetts after recently undergoing aggressive surgery for a brain tumor. Because his tumor was operable, the 76-year-old is a candidate for the most promising treatments.
