In February 2023, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed into law a bill that required health insurers to cover colorectal cancer screenings recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and eliminate cost-sharing for required follow-up colonoscopies after an abnormal non-invasive screening test with the goal of improving screening rates across New Jersey.

New Jersey Colorectal Cancer Screening Coverage
New Jersey state law requires health insurance coverage of colorectal cancer screenings recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) which includes high-sensitivity guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT), fecal immunochemical test (FIT), stool DNA test (such as Cologuard), colonoscopy, CT colonography, and flexible sigmoidoscopy, and eliminates cost-sharing requirements for colonoscopies performed following an abnormal non-colonoscopy colorectal cancer screening test.
Health insurance carriers (including the State Health Benefits Program or School Employees’ Health Benefits Program, and the Medicaid Program) will be required to cover a colorectal cancer screening recommended by the USPSTF and cover colonoscopies without cost sharing following an abnormal result on a non-invasive screening test.
New Jersey is the 27th deadliest state for colorectal cancer in the U.S.
