Andi Dwyer, Fight CRC’s Director of Health Promotion, was invited to attend a special session at the White House to discuss potential ways to enhance patient access to clinical trials. Blue Ribbon Panel. Fight CRC Medical Advisory Board member Dr. Edith Mitchell was invited to serve on the Cancer Moonshot’s Blue Ribbon Panel Clinical Trials Working Group and our founder Nancy Roach served on an advisory committee for the panel. (Check out the panel's final recommendations where colorectal cancer prevention and Lynch syndrome were highlighted!) We doubled our research grant! In a joint effort to jumpstart research, Fight CRC and the Cancer Research Institute teamed up and will be awarding $400,000 research grant to a dedicated researcher studying colorectal cancer. New patient resources. We launched several new resources to provide a deeper dive into various topics like side effects, psychosocial health, caregiving and more. One of our favorites was the Skin Toxicity Mini Magazine and sexual health podcast series. Stay tuned for new releases in 2017! The Immunotherapy Work Group has written a white paper on next steps for CRC immunotherapy. This has been a huge undertaking with dedication from the Cancer Research Institute, Fight Colorectal Cancer and the 31 experts and innovative thinkers from around the world. Dr. Al Benson gave a preview of the work at AACR 2016. Fight CRC continues to directly support innovative research! We expect exciting things for 2017! We moved! To continue to meet the growing demands of patients, caregivers and families touched by colorectal cancer, lower costs and further our mission, Fight CRC relocated from Alexandria, Va. to the “Show Me State” in September 2016. Come visit us in Springfield, Mo.! We welcomed new full-time staff. Fight CRC welcomed Nichole Hyde (Business Manager) and Dan Canfield (Research Manager) to help meet the growing needs of our advocates. We extend our sincere gratitude to Jerri-Lyn and Keavy, team members who made job transitions this year, for their dedication to our advocates and our mission! The United States Preventive Screening Task Force made updates to its screening recommendations. After review of the recommendations by our Medical Advisory Board and our staff, we submitted a response to the USPSTF. You can read our comments here. These updates will help the 23 million Americans who need to be screened for CRC. Sparks of Strength. Fight CRC launched Sparks of Strength in Music City after our One Million Strong Showcase. From there, a favorite event was born. Several other communities across the U.S. hosted these events over the year. The event includes a luminary ceremony that remembers those we’ve lost and honors fighters who are surviving. Lt. Governor Kleefisch became an all-star advocate! Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch got deeply involved with Fight CRC this year! A survivor herself, she shared her story before ringing the NASDAQ closing bell with Fight CRC to kick off March 2016's Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. She helped welcome us to Wisconsin in April as we hosted One Million Strong Milwaukee. In fall, the Fight CRC research advocates attended RATS Academy at University of Wisconsin Cancer Center and she joined the tour and talked with our advocates. The connection between policy and research is alive and well! We began to translate our patient resources! Our skin toxicity mini magazine was translated to Chinese! We were excited to take this big step! We plan to translate more resources in the new year! We hiked Longs Peak. With vision from the Schrack family, Fight CRC has a new tradition! We scale mountains for colorectal cancer - literally! This year we hiked a Colorado 14er (a hike that reaches 14,000 feet or more)! We had so much fun we're planning another hike for 2017. Meghan King Edmonds, one of the leading ladies of the Real Housewives of Orange County, attended Call-on Congress in March 2016. The Bravo crew and fellow real housewife, Heather Dubrow, joined her. Cameras were all around us during the Hill Briefing and Celebration Dinner. We rallied around our glowing TV screens in August 2016 as we watched our episode air and millions of Housewife fans get introduced to Fight CRC. 10th Annual Call-on Congress. This year, on our 10th anniversary, we focused on the collective voice for change and broke records. Our 10th annual Call-on Congress brought in the largest group to date - 125 advocates, 14 junior advocates and 3 celebrities! We had 131 congressional meetings, sent more than 10,000 emails to Congress and had more than 29 states represented! It was a great way to celebrate our 10th year on the Hill. Don't miss us in 2017 - Register for the 2017 Call-on Congress! We were at MAJOR events across the country. With the help of our advocates, we hosted events from coast to coast! You could find Fight CRC advocates everywhere! Here's a few of our favorites: hosted One Million Strong at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville raised awareness at sporting events with the Cleveland Cavaliers, The Philadelphia Phillies, The Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks and the Kansas City Royals jumped into a frozen Ohio lake on New Years Day at the Polar Bear Dip rang the closing bell of NASDAQ in Times Square to kick off March 2016 hosted Coffee with the Experts in Nashville hosted One Million Strong in Milwaukee, Wisconsin played Cornhole with Craig Campbell and his celebrity friends during CMA Fest in Nashville cheered on Dylan Gonda as he biked 2,745 miles from Alberta, Canada, through the United States and into Mexico to raise awareness in honor of his dad teamed up with Dallas-based Clint Cummings, a tattoo artist from season two of Ink Master and Tattoo Nightmares Miami, to present The Art of Heroes sang the night away with Atlanta's celebrity voice coach Mama Jan Smith for her 60th birthday bash to support fellow coach, Erica Hoffman who fights stage IV colon cancer met professional race car driver who will be featured in our 2017 PSAs! (more to come!) In 2016 we were honored with the biggest single donation in Fight CRC history. No-Shave November made the largest donation in our organization’s history ($378,650!!) We put those funds toward creating more patient resources and boosting our research grant. (We doubled our research funding and gave $200,000 this year!) Looking Forward to 2017 2016 was an amazing year to change the game for colorectal cancer. (See how we changed the game and read our 2016 Impact Report!) With this year coming to a close, we thank all of the advocates who made this year great. We're looking forward to an even bigger, "in-your-face" year of fighting colorectal cancer.
