Alison's Story

My brother Eric was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in 2012 at the age of 28. Doctors told him  any younger siblings needed to be screened as well. I'm the youngest, and when I went in for a colonoscopy, they removed 12 polyps. I was in shock, and so were the doctors, since I was only 26 years old. I was told I would have had cancer within a year or two if I hadn't gotten screened. I owe my life to my brother, who passed away Jan. 1 2016. He is my hero. Before he died, he told our dad that he was so glad that he saved my life because I have four kids, and he did not want my children to see me in that state. I now have to go every year for the rest of my life to get screened. To this day, doctors have removed 28 polyps and I'm 30 years old.

Alison's Advice

Never give up. I know easier said then done but you can do it. No one fights alone!

  1. Eric truly is a hero for our family and a great example of a strength and determination in the fight against cancer. He was dealt a terrible hand with going from perfect health to battling cancer and feeling as though nobody wanted somebody he considered “broken”. As a family, we stood by and fought the battle with him every day. It tore him apart when he was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer but he was happy when he found out a year later that because of testing, his sister was safe from fighting the same battle. Colon cancer has rocked our family and took our family’s son, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle away from us far too soon. It still hurts at family outings not seeing and hearing the many adventures we experienced over the years with Eric. My kids and I are very blessed every day to have our wife and mom in our lives and safe from cancer as we know this would have been our result as well. Alison you are a strong fighter and have been through 4 colonoscopies and 28 polyps removed before she 30. I love you and cherish every day because as our family has witnessed… It can be taken from us in a blink of an eye.
