Doug-Sharp OMSHow do YOU define One Million Strong? To me, One Million Strong is the collective voice, strength, and determination of all people affected by colorectal cancer who are out to do anything that will improve the lives of everyone living in the colorectal cancer community. Where have you drawn strength? I have drawn strength from those I have met who are currently fighting and have fought the disease. I have also drawn strength from my wife and family who have supported me in my efforts to make a difference in the lives of all people touched by colorectal cancer. Who is your champion? In this part of my life I have drawn inspiration from several people. To list a few of the many:
  • Tom O’Sullivan, my dear friend who lost his own life to this disease, for the way that he taught me and others to care for other people more than one’s self. And for the dignity he showed even when dying.
  • Kate Murphy, for the way she lived after diagnosis knowing that the disease would probably end her life, but living and giving in a way that would make life better for the next generations to come.
  • Rose Hausmann, for the way she still lives her life with passion and generosity towards others. It is so rare to see this in anyone, let alone some that is living through such challenges that life has given her. What a true champion for colorectal cancer!
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with others? No matter what you are doing currently in your life or where you are in your life, the state of your life will get better, and it can get worse. SO, never stop! Always strive to take another step forward, because life will try to push you backward. Get involved in something! Make a difference somewhere! I use this following statement when I write and speak, “Do not rest on the things you have already accomplished. DO ONE MORE THING!” I AM a husband, a father, and a grandfather. I AM a soldier in the fight against colorectal cancer. I AM STRONG! Want to share your story? Submit yours today!
