Recommendations for the Trump Administration

It’s no secret the cancer community has concerns regarding the future of healthcare policies in America, specifically the Affordable Care Act repeal and replace plan. Many advocates have reached out to us and passionately shared their fears. We’re listening and we’re acting! On January 20, Fight Colorectal Cancer sent a letter to the Trump Administration with our recommendations for policy priorities. It is critically important for the new administration to remove barriers to colorectal cancer screenings, invest in research and protect patients’ best interests.

Fight CRC’s Recommendations to the Trump Administration

Below are the issues we asked President Trump to prioritize:

Remove Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screenings

  • Sign legislation into law removing the loophole in current Medicare policy requiring beneficiaries to pay co-insurance if polyps are removed during a screening colonoscopy. Fight Colorectal Cancer has worked tirelessly on this issue for the past three Congresses and most recently had more than 350 combined co-sponsors in the 114th Congress (HR 1220/S 624).
  • Ensure the “replace” component of "repeal and replace" provides sufficient insurance coverage for those 50 and older and/or high-risk individuals to receive a screening colonoscopy at no charge, following USPSTF recommendations.
  • Invest in community health centers and the CDC's Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP) supporting states and tribes across the country that are providing education, patient navigation and/or free or low cost colorectal cancer screenings to underserved populations.

Invest in Research

  • Follow through on momentum of the 21st Century Cures Act by ensuring funding for the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, the Precision Medicine Initiative and substantial increases to current NIH funding levels.
  • Include patient feedback in discussions and decisions relating to clinical trials and treatment options.
  • Revise the grant application review process to better reward bold ideas, creative risks and innovative approaches, following the Vision and Pathway for the NIH report.

Protect Patients’ Best Interests

  • Ensure patients with pre-existing conditions, such as cancer, will not be denied insurance coverage or face discrimination through narrow networks and other price control measures.
  • Streamline FDA processes to improve efficiency while maintaining patient safety and drug effectiveness as a top priority.
  • Ensure patients receive individualized treatments that are most effective for each patient, following NCCN guidelines rather than treatment pathways or other value tools.

Now it’s your turn.

We sent our letter representing all of you, but now it's your turn to act. With the new administration and 115th Congress in place, we need you to reach out. Email Congress and ask them to protect colorectal cancer patients as they deliberate the plan for repealing and replacing the ACA. They need to hear your voice and know your story. 3. I already reached out to both my US Senators (Pat Toomey, Bob Casey) and House Representative on January 12 when they were having their late night session to begin the repeal process for ACA. I am so grateful for the voice and support of FCRC and agree that as individuals we must all be relentless in our efforts to communicate our concerns. Every voice matters!

  4. I’m totally in favor of, anything the FCRC recommends. I do feel like the whole process is one big mess. My fear of the reversal, he wants, might only create a bigger problem. My hope is for, ALL to benefit, from a a changed process. From the pre-existing illness of Hydrocephalus, I struggled with as a child, allowed no health care. Now I’m on group insurance through work, allows me health care, affordable or not, it’s still insurance that helped pay for my CRC surgery.

  12. May sure that all people can afford health insurance, those with prior conditions have already paid a large price, may sure their rates are affordable like the rest of the nation.

  13. It is important that people with colorectal cancer be protected with a plan for repealing & replacing the ACA. This is a terrible disease that every person needs help with.

  14. Ensure patients with pre-existing conditions, such as cancer, will not be denied insurance coverage or face discrimination through narrow networks and other price control measures.

  15. The citizens of this country should not have to beg their ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES to do what is right and reasonable.

  16. Hello. I’m requesting Trump’s administration prioritize patients’ best interests. This includes ensuring the “replace” component of Repeal and Replace provides sufficient insurance coverage for those 50 and older and/or high risk individuals to receive a screening colonoscopy at no charge.

It also means ensuring patients with pre-existing conditions – like colorectal cancer – will not be denied insurance coverage or face discrimination.

DO NOT get rid of the ACA!
    Thanks,
    Beth
