Chanting, texting, or hashtagging, stage IV survivor, John MacLeod often reminds me of his mantra “no one fights alone.” Next, to John, I can always count on seeing his equally-feisty powerhouse of a wife, Angie Nicholas MacLeod echoing this same sentiment.

For March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we embroidered on our Fight Colorectal Cancer sweatshirts, “#NoOneFightsAlone.”

It was as if we were foreshadowing what we would see and bear witness to. Because this March, we saw the incredible strength and resilience of caregivers, family members, and friends who were rallying to support or honor the memory of someone who had been impacted by this disease.

At each event we hosted, we saw firsthand the devastating ripple effect that isn’t included the statistic,137,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year. As I look back on this month, etched in my mind are the faces of caregivers (mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, siblings, children, and friends) who bravely shared their stories. No two stories were the same. But what they had in common was a relentless spirit, an unwillingness to give up or forget. They were:

Mothers and Fathers

Husband and Wives

Brothers and Sisters

Daughters and Sons

Friends and Family

Fellow Fighters and Survivors

This March, I wanted to take the opportunity to appreciate, acknowledge, and thank all our brave caregivers, family members, and friends for their strength. Caring for another person, dedicating yourself to support a fellow survivor or fighter, ensuring someone’s story is never forgotten is an act of love. It can be physically demanding, emotionally challenging, and inspiring. If you are a caregiver, family member, or friend, your role requires support and encouragement. Fight Colorectal Cancer is here for you because we believe like John and Angie, that no one should fight alone.
