March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, but how are you supporting national efforts to cut down disparities related to this preventable disease?

As an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and Associate Member of Huntsman Cancer Institute, Dr. Charles R. Rogers will be conducting a research study, which seeks to advance understanding of the intersection of masculinity barriers to care and colorectal cancer (CRC) screening completion among African-American men in Utah and Minnesota. The first phase of the study is entitled, Chat & Chew II. (Utah IRB #: 00113679).

Why should I care about this research? The playing field is not even as it relates to deaths from colorectal cancer for African-American men. Thus, there is a critical need for exploring the complex, understudied factors influencing African-American men’s screening completion for CRC in MN and UT. Ultimately, this research will contribute to translational solutions eliminating disparities in health, cancer, and healthcare, moving closer to the long term goal of achieving health equity for all in the U.S.
