A new study in Nature points to colibactin—a DNA-damaging toxin made by certain E. coli strains as a potential clue to #EOCRC. Colibactin-linked mutations were found to be 3.3 times more common in CRC patients under 40 compared to those over 70. We asked our board member & researcher @c_eng1 about this study. She said this suggests, but does not prove, that E. coli infection may contribute to early-onset CRC. More research is needed & ongoing. Stay tuned.
Genetic testing can provide lifesaving information to patients and their families! While it's commonly believed that genetic testing is only for those with a known family risk, guidelines recommend it for anyone diagnosed with colorectal cancer before age 50. Even those diagnosed after 50 can benefit. In partnership with CGA-IGC, Michelle Springer, a genetic counselor with the University of Colorado Hereditary Cancer Program and a member of CGA-IGC, explains why genetic testing is crucial.
