Beth Carner
Beth Carner
Beth was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at age of 25 despite undergoing recommended screening tests related to her known history of Lynch Syndrome. Lynch Syndrome is an inherited syndrome that predisposes afflicted individuals to develop early onset colorectal and other cancers. When she had exhausted all conventional treatments she came to see me as a patient. At her first visit her dad rolled her into the exam room in a wheelchair and she was so depressed that she barely could look me in the eye. She had good reason for her despair; she had been told that she had 6 weeks to live. After a long discussion, she decided to enrol on the first clinical trial using the immuno-oncology agent pembrolizumab for patients like her. The study was designed to test the benefit of the drug in patients with Lynch Syndrome after doctors at Johns Hopkins had observed a single patient who had advanced colon cancer and Lynch Syndrome had an extraordinary response to treatment. She had a dramatic and complete response to therapy. This year we celebrate the 10th year since her diagnosis. She is alive and disease free at age 35 and has returned to singing and dancing in musical theater productions. Her story is catalogued in a podcast recorded as a part of the Cancer Letter’s Cancer History Project at at https://cancerletter.com/in-the-archives/20220610_8/ . Her story is a testimony to her courage and is meant to highlight the fact that clinical trials are how we make progress. It is also meant as a reminder that even in the serious world of cancer care there are more and more stories with happy endings!

Colonoscopies save lives – it did for me! I had no symptoms and woke up from what I thought was going to be an all-clear diagnosis only to find out that I had cancer. Thankfully, my surgeon and the doctors and nurses at the KU Cancer Center here in Kansas City took great care of me and saved my life. I also couldn’t have made it without my fabulous caregiver husband, James. We had only been married for one year at my diagnosis and my cancer took a terrible toll on him too. Two years has passed since you left us and the grief is not getting any easier with time. If the age for screening had dropped from 50 to 45 just five years sooner, you’d be here with us today. All you ever wanted was to ensure no one else’s family had to go through what you went through, what we went through, what we are still going through without your physical presence here on earth with us today. You ARE still saving lives though. Each time someone shares their story of you sharing your story, we know your suffering and death were not in vain. It brings us to our knees to know how hard you worked to advocate for early diagnosis. It wasn’t work to you though. It was a conversation with a friend, fellow firefighter or stranger. Your legacy also lives on through us, through your firefighter brothers/sisters and through Bruce’s Bucket Brigade, The Bruce DeArk First Responder Cancer Education Program through the Colon Cancer Prevention Project. Save a place for me, babe, I’ll be there soon…

The limitations of current screening and risk identification methods drive the critical need for Congress to prioritize colorectal cancer research and funding. Traditional beliefs that routine colonoscopies suffice or that only those with specific health conditions are at risk dangerously overlook the disease’s complexities. My mother’s experience exemplifies this oversight. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle and undergoing a colonoscopy that detected no issues, she was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer three years later, despite no genetic risk factors, and tragically passed away after a 2.5-year battle. This highlights the inadequacy of existing preventive measures and the urgent need for a broader, more nuanced approach to early detection beyond what colonoscopies can offer. There’s a vital need to explore under-researched risk factors and early detection markers to prevent further loss of life. It’s not enough to adjust the age for screenings; we must revolutionize our approach to fight this disease more effectively. By committing to expanded research and funding, we can honor those we’ve lost and protect future generations from similar fates.

Chris was my person, my soulmate, my protector, and my very best friend. He was and will always be the love of my life. We were making future plans, we had dreams and goals, we were working side by every day and life was good until November 21st 2023. The doctor came in the room and told us he had cancer, and it was stage 4 colon cancer, we both looked at each other and couldn’t breathe. No one said a word. I felt my heart sink and although we tried to stay optimistic, we were terrified. The last three months were the absolute worst time of my life. To watch the person, you love more than anything in the world endure so much. We had all the hard conversations, we spent countless days and nights holding hands, talking, crying and praying. He had to make some very tough decisions and through it all I watched this incredible man fight harder than anyone can ever imagine. He was so strong, so brave and fought to the very end. I was blessed to be holding his hand on his last day. I was able to tell him everything I wanted to say, I was able to pray with him and kiss him goodbye and he knew I was right there beside him like I always promised I would be.

You were too young to get this terrible disease, a year before the screening recommendations changed to age 45. What a shame, that we are still fighting to get the age of screening even lower when data out there suggest more and more younger people under age 45 are getting this disease. I will continue to advocate for early screenings to help others avoid your fate. Your two teens whom you never got to see grow up into young adults are doing well. We all miss you and think of you every day. We love you Dan and miss you especially for all these milestones. When you were diagnosed, cancer did not know it had messed with my strong, stubborn Irish Dad. My love, my husband, you chose me! Even when I asked – are you sure you want to ride this cancer ride with me, I can still remember the “why would you even ask me that question when you know the answer” look you gave me. A lot of people focus on the patient that has been diagnosed with cancer, but the caregiver is never really given the appreciation that is deserved. Being the one diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer is not easy – no one will object to that, but I cannot imagine the roller coaster of emotions you have had to ride these past three years or watching me decline knowing there was nothing you could do for me. I will be forever grateful for you sticking by my side when honestly, you didn’t have to – you chose to stay. You know how to keep me on track, and take care of me the way only you can. Thank you for making sure I eat on days I didn’t want to and giving me my meds because god knows I would have either overdosed myself or not taken them not being able to remember which I did or didn’t do. I will forever love you and appreciate everything you have done for me. I hope someday I will be able to show you just how much I love you!

Where do I start? I don’t know what I would have done that first year without you! I know I probably drove you and Adrian crazy (and continue to do so), but you always dropped everything and helped when you were able. We went from not knowing each other to being lifelong friends. I am so thankful for everything you have done for me to this day, and also thankful for your friendship. I will never ever be able to completely thank you for everything, but please know that I love you to the moon and back and am forever grateful for you being put on my path, especially when I needed you the most!

My Nebraska mom, it’s crazy how our friendship started but over the last couple of years I cannot imagine my life without you in it! I am so grateful you were able to pick up where Josh couldn’t. Our trips to Columbus were great – being able to get out of the house and talk, sometimes going out to eat depending on how I felt after chemo. I am so grateful you were put into path when you did! You have always been someone that picks me up and makes me feel better when I am hitting rock bottom! I hope you always know just how much I appreciate you and how much you mean to me and my family! My mom, grandma, brother, sisters, brother in law, etc have all contributed to my healing both emotionally and physically. When they knew my husband couldn’t be around to take care of me in Nebraska or Houston, they didn’t think twice about taking turns coming to see me and making sure that I was taken care of! I think they all knew when something was off too, because I got a call, text, or Facetime with my nephews when I had the worst days, and those calls, text and especially Facetime with the boys made everything ok again. We have always been a close knit family and for that I will always be grateful. I know that if I need anyone of them I can count of any of them to be here. Of course this includes my cousin Julie who has traveled to stay with me several times as well as my Aunts, Kristy and Angie who always know what comforting thing I need. Oh girls, I don’t even know where to start! When you are first diagnosed with cancer there are so many people that are by your side, but as you move through cancer over time, people start to dwindle out of the picture! I have always been able to count on you and know that if I ever need anything, you all will be right there in a matter time from your house to mine (As I found out when Sarah had to take me to the ER last year and watch me ride off in the ambulance. Tiff – you were lined up to take me to get the same procedure twice, but my body said nope, we aren’t up for it and gave me reasons to get out of it both time. Jordan – you flew clear to Houston for me for a surgery at MD Anderson that I was scared out of my mind for!) When I became very ill to the point people were worried I wasn’t coming out of it – you all made sure to make monthly “Pour It Out” nights to get me back on track and off the couch. You ladies always seem to know what I need to hear and when I need to hear it and I always know how to make you cry! My dad fought 8 long years with cancer (June 2014 – October 2021). He was 39 when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon cancer spread to his liver. After a major 8 hour long surgery they deemed him cancer free. After 6 months in remission the cancer had come back in both of his lungs and in his liver again. My father endured over 250 chemo treatments and several surgeries. He passed away at 48, I was only 21. He also wanted me to remember this “Advocate for yourself because a doctor isn’t going to do it for you”. He beat a ton of odds, and stayed positive all the way to the end. His life was cut short, so in order for me to make an effort to live longer I have to check early, however, a lot of doctors over look this as “I’m too young” or “I don’t see why you need one”. Colon cancer is typically caught when it’s too late, make sure you advocate for yourself. This can be prevented with the routine check ups, no matter the age, early detection means longer life. Don’t cut yourself short because a doctor didn’t want to refer you for a colonoscopy.

Shane’s tumor was found at a very late stage but just the right time and was rushed into surgery after surgery and ended up discharged from the hospital after 40 days and with an ileostomy. During that 40 days complications from stage 3b colon cancer he lost 60 lbs, had multiple drain tubes, and hardships difficult to share but he survived. Now he has completed chemo, ileostomy reversed and back to normal weight. Life will be forever changed by this diagnosis but our most important lesson was to believe in God, Heaven, healing.

She died January 5, 2022 at the age of 29 from stage 4 colon cancer within weeks of diagnosis i’m such an advocate for testing for young adults and genetic testing like in her case even though she complained, it wasn’t taken seriously and they didn’t believe her that she had rectal bleeding. It took a year and a half for them to do a Hail Mary and do a second CAT scan correctly not just looking for kidney stones and our rolled was rocked by Devastation I think the hardest part of it all, but she was never really given a chance to fight it was taken from her because they didn’t believe her and how important it is for medical healthcare to listen to complaints and take them seriously, even if they’re young.

Losing you has felt insufferable. It’s such an immense loss that it feels like no one else in the world could possibly understand because how do you survive that? Sadly, too many people understand these feelings all too well. We will forever keep fighting for you dad. No one should go through what you did. We love you until the end of time.

Timmy Bee. I wish I had more time to love you, but with the little time I did have with you, I loved you more than I have ever loved before. And I would do it again. You inspired so many people to get tested and because of you, their cancer was caught in stage 1.
I love and miss you terribly, you are my hero.

Tommy Lee Cassida was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 57 but after 6 years of radiation and chemotherapy, major surgeries, scans, biopsies and procedures, he was told he was out of options. Songs and movies romanticize cancer in lyrics like “live like you were dying” but the reality of trying to live life through endless appointments, pain, suffering, worry, and fatigue while watching your body wither away, there is no sky diving or Rocky Mountain climbing or riding bulls…only brave attempts to muster up enough energy to sit with family and friends for a holiday gathering or just a short visit. Bottom line is CRC STEALS YOUR LIFE!

Uncle Bruce, I have so many fond memories of when you would visit Grandma and we would all sit around and eat ice cream! We didn’t see you as often as we would have liked, but when you did come around, you definitely left us with great memories! You are gone way too soon and I can only hope you are having the best time with Grandma and Grandpa Riley! I’m sure we will meet again, but I am hoping all these prayers being said and all these people I have supporting me that I will be able to stay on earth a lot longer.
