My mom was diagnosed in 2011 with early-stage colon cancer. Through treatment she would be in remission after one year but was left with lifelong complications due to her poor health and the damage chemo had done on her body. In 2015 through yearly screening, they caught another mass in her colon in a tricky spot to operate on. After seeing specialist in NY and Philly, they determined she was inoperable, and the tumor would spread until she passed away in 2017 at age 54. I was 20 years old. Colon cancer has affected my family in so many life altering ways. Financially, emotionally, physically. There is not an area of our lives that it didn’t touch. I wonder all the time if there was more research in treatment, if there were other options, if treatment was more affordable, that our story might be different.
