Sonia Kupfer is a physician-scientist with clinical and research interests in genetics and genomics of gastrointestinal cancers especially inherited cancer syndromes. She graduated from Yale University and completed her medical training including Chief Residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Kupfer has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Health, American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and GI Research Foundation. She is Professor of Medicine and holds leadership positions as Director of the Center for Clinical Genetics & Genomics and inaugural Director of the Community for Advancement of Physician-Scientists (CAPS) program in the Biological Sciences Division. Dr. Kupfer is Past-President of the Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancer and a current council member of the International Society for Inherited Gastrointestinal Tumors (InSiGHT). She serves on the Board of Editors for the journal Gastroenterology. Dr. Kupfer received the UChicago Division of Biological Sciences Diversity and Inclusion Junior award, the Joseph B. Kirsner Mentorship Award, the AGA Young Investigator Award, and the Albert De La Chapelle Distinguished Mentor Award. She was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2024. She was recently named as the Sara and Harold Lincoln Thompson Professor in the Biological Sciences Division.
