Al B. Benson III, MD, FACP, FACCC, FASCO, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Director for Cooperative Groups at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research focuses on gastrointestinal cancer clinical trials, biologic therapies, health services research and cancer guideline development, with funding from sources including the NIH. Dr. Benson has received the ASCO Statesman Award and has served in numerous leadership roles, including Vice-Chair for the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group and chair of the NCCN Hepatobiliary Guidelines Panel and the Colon/Rectal/Small Bowel/Anal Cancers Guideline Panel as well as a member of the NCCN Executive Committee. He has also held key positions with the International Society of GI Oncology, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC) and other cancer research and advocacy organizations.
