Rick's Story

My wife, Georgia, was diagnosed with stage III rectal cancer in October of 2014. We decided on complete transparency as we began our fight with cancer. I've posted Georgia's story every day on Facebook and the outpouring of love and support have been tremendous. As of this writing (December 5, 2014) we're entering the fifth of six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. This will be followed by surgery and likely adjuvant chemotherapy. We have the greatest hope of survival. We believe with the medical care we're receiving and the support and love of our family, friends and community, we'll be on the up-side of statistics. You might have noticed I keep saying "we." That's because we know that no one goes through this fight by themselves and we have not allowed the disease to isolate us. I hope others can find something they need by Georgia and I sharing our story.

What One Million Strong means to Rick

One Million March means, "you are not only in this fight!"

Rick's Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for and receive help. This is not your normal, it's your temporary normal.

  1. I was diagnosed February 23 2014 with stage 3 rectal cancer. I had 6 weeks of chemo and radiation. Then surgery to remove the tumor. I had an illiostomy bag for six weeks and then had surgery for the reversal of my illostomy. Then 4 months of chemo through my port and oral chemo. As of this February to the day I am cancer free. It is a tough road but stay strong and will get through everything.

  2. Keep up the fight! I am a survivor of Stage 3 rectal cancer since 2007. I have been through everything you are describing and thanks to my husband, our family and a great team of doctors, came out on the “up-side of the statistics” as you so eloquently said. If Georgia wants to talk to someone who has been through it all, feel free to reach out. All the Best, Andrea

    1. My name is Juanell and I was diagnosed in July with stage ll rectal cancer. I would like to know if you would be willing to talk to me for support.

    2. Hi Juanell, of course- please email me at the address above with your phone number. I will call you. Please indicate what time of day works for you and where you live- so I know if it is a different time zone.
