Evelyn's Story

My life before cancer was fun.  I was doing a lot of traveling and seemingly did not have a care in the world!  I had bought my first home and moved in the year I was diagnosed.   I had not even finished unpacking when cancer hit.

It was a scary time because I never imagined I would get cancer. Since 2004, I have had two rounds of chemo, five weeks of radiation, four major surgeries, mets twice, a couple of biopsies, infections which required drains, blood clots and pneumonia.  I am here and alive and slaying cancer!  I have not had any cancer issues since 2008!  I am grateful and happy to be alive!

What One Million Strong means to Evelyn

One Million Strong means being actively involved in the fight against cancer.  I want to share my knowledge and experience with others so that they can check themselves early to avoid going through what I went through.

Evelyn's Advice

I am telling you the truth when I say that, cancer can hit you like a lightning bolt, and split you in half!  My advice to everyone is to rail, scream and cry at first.  Let all the grief out in any way that is comfortable for you.

Then start fighting for your life.  Do not let yourself wallow in the inevitable emotional pain.  Depression and sadness will try to kick you down, you have to fight back by living, enjoying your life and looking forward.  Dancing, laughing and loving.

Your emotional, mental and spiritual health is just as important as your physical health.  Focus on doing the things that make you happy.  This will make you mentally strong and able to deal with all the things that can come your way during cancer.   Arm yourself with information and be the captain of your ship.  I know that cancer is a hard pill to swallow, you can decide how you will deal with it, do not let it own you or command you.  You must be the storm that slays cancer and everything in its path.
